Das meine nächste CD in dieser Traumbesetzung aufgenommen wird, war ein langgehegter Wunsch, – und eigentlich längst überfällig, da die Gruppe seit Jahren zusammenarbeitet und immer wieder „live“ zu hören war.
Marika Falk, Jost H. Hecker und ich arbeiten schon seit 1994 zusammen. 1995 habe ich Charlie Mariano ins` Studio eingeladen, mit uns die CD „TIGRIB“ (Konnex 5084) aufzunehmen.
1998 kam der Multiinstrumentalist Roger Jannotta ins` Quartett und ein Jahr später hatten wir die Gelegen- heit, unsere Musik mit den zwei Bläsern noch einmal „live“ zu präsentieren, - zu hören auf der CD „MARIANO“ (Konnex 5087).

Ich freute mich, dass meine Idee ins` Studio zu gehen, so begeistert von den Kollegen aufgenommen wurde.
Der eigentliche Initiator aber war Joe Kienemann, der uns für einen Live-Mitschnitt in seiner Sendung „Bühne frei im Studio II“ in den Bayerischen Rundfunk eingeladen hatte. Für diesen Anlass bereiteten wir ein fast komplett neues Programm vor und der Abend wurde ein voller Erfolg.

Die Stücke aus dem Zyklus „Rund ums Auto“ waren die Eckpfeiler des Rundfunkkonzertes. So wurde BREMSFLÜSSIGKEIT zum ersten Stück der CD. (Danke Jost, - war `ne weise Entscheidung !) Jost H. Hecker ist mit seiner Komposition schon auf der CD „FOUR COMPOSERS“ mit dem Modern String Quartet zu hören.
Im Laufe der letzten fünf Jahre entwickelte sich eine sehr schöne, nicht nur musikalische Freundschaft mit Roger Jannotta. TUNE FOR ROGER war mein Geburtstagsgeschenk zu seinem 57sten. CALL IT A DAY habe ich extra für diese CD geschrieben. Meine Idee war der Rollentausch zwischen Cello und Blasinstrument. Roger kreiert mit seiner Bassklarinette einen wunderbaren Klangteppich als Boden für die Melodie auf dem Cello.
Für den Zyklus „Rund ums Auto“ habe ich DIE KLEINE WALZE aus dem Jahr 1984 wieder hervor geholt. Das Arrangement mit dem dreistimmigen Kanon eignet sich ausgezeichnet für unser Quartett.
Natürlich gehört die ZÜNDKERZE auch in den Zyklus. Diesen Blues habe ich auch erst kurz vor dem Studiotermin geschrieben. Bei der Probe für diese Aufnahmen stellte ich fest, dass sich Marikas` Bali- Gongs genau in die Tonart dieses Stückes einfügen. Ich bin sehr froh, dass sie die Musik mit dieser Klangfarbe bereichert.
Die zwei 5/4 Melodien KANON I und KANON II dienen als Rahmen für das Titelstück dieser CD. Mit AHOI ist das Grußwort aus Tschechien gemeint. Ich habe die 7/8 Komposition meinem Freund Jost gewidmet.
Den BRAUTWALZER schrieb ich für meine Freunde Bernhard und Ruth anlässlich ihrer Hochzeit.
Auch ein Hochzeitsgeschenk war das Stück DER CHAUFFEUR GRATULIERT AUCH SCHÖN. Als Chauffeur für das Brautpaar widmete ich diese Melodie meiner Schwester Maren und ihrem Mann Thomas. Natürlich gehört es auch in den Zyklus „Rund ums`Auto“. Inspiriert durch die John McLaughlin`s Komposition „Guardian Angel“ entstand mein JAZZPERANTO. Für mich ist Musik die Weltsprache aller Nationen unserer Erde. Sie öffnet die Seelen und Herzen der Menschen.
Als Finale dieser CD haben wir SOON, diese wundervolle Komposition von Roger Jannotta, gewählt.
Als Theatermusik für den Faustzyklus der Münchener Kammerspiele geschrieben und aufgeführt, haben Roger und ich dieses Stück schon im Trio mit dem Vibraphonisten David Friedman auf der CD „LATE“
(Konnex 5096) veröffentlicht.

Vielen Dank an meine Frau Birgit für ihre Unterstützung und Inspiration. Marika, Roger und Jost für ihren Rat und ihre musikalische Leidenschaft, diese Musik erblühen zu lassen. Michael Müller Jin danke ich für seine wirklich aufopfernde Arbeit als Tonmeister im Studio. (BLUES FOR MICHEL kommt auf die nächste CD). For a long time I had wanted to record my next CD with this ideal constellation of musicians – and this was in fact long overdue, as the group has been working together for years and has often given public performances.
Marika Falk, Jost H. Hecker and I have already been working together since 1994. In 1995 I invited Charlie Mariano to the studio to record the CD “TIGRIB” (Konnex 5084) with us.
In 1998 the multi-instrumentalist Roger Jannotta completed the quartet and a year later we had the opportunity to present our music live again with the two wind players – which can be heard on the CD “Mariano” (Konnex 5087).

I was very pleased that my idea of making this recording was met with so much enthusiasm from my colleagues.
The real initiator, however, was Joe Kienemann, who had invited us onto his programme “Bühne frei im Studio II” at Bavarian Radio for a live recording. We prepared an almost entirely new programme for this occasion and the evening was a great success.

The radio concert was built around the pieces from the cycle “Rund ums Auto” (All about cars). So BREMSFLÜSSIGKEIT (Brake fluid) became the first piece on the CD (Thank you Jost – that was a good decision!) Jost H. Hecker has already recorded this composition on the CD “FOUR COMPOSERS” with the Modern String Quartet.
Over the last five years Roger Jannotta has become a good friend as well as a colleague. TUNE FOR ROGER was my present to him on his 57th birthday.
I wrote CALL IT A DAY specially for this CD. My idea was to swap the roles of the cello and the wind instrument. Roger creates a wonderful texture with the bass clarinet as a foundation for the melody on the cello.
For the cycle “Rund ums Auto” I resurrected DIE KLEINE WALZE (The little steamroller (fun on the word waltz)) composed in 1984. The arrangement with the three-voice canon was ideal for our quartet.
ZÜNDKERZE (Spark plug) of course also belongs to this cycle, though I only wrote this blues number just before the CD was recorded. During the rehearsal beforehand I discovered that Marika’s Bali gongs matched the key of this piece perfectly. I am very happy with the extra colour she added to the music as a result.
The two 5/4 melodies KANON I and KANON II provide a framework for the title number of this CD.
AHOI in this context is the word used by the Czechs as a greeting. I have dedicated the 7/8 composition to my friend Jost.
I wrote the BRAUTWALZER (Waltz of the bride and groom) for the wedding of my friends Bernhard and Ruth.
The piece DER CHAUFFEUR GRATULIERT AUCH SCHÖN (The chauffeur also wishes you well) was also a wedding present. As the chauffeur for the bride and groom I dedicated this melody to my sister Maren and her husband Thomas. Of course it also belongs to the cycle “Rund ums Auto”.
JAZZPERANTO was inspired by the John McLaughlin composition “Guardian Angel”. For me music is the international language spoken by all the nations of the world. It speaks to people’s hearts.
For the finale of this CD we chose SOON, a wonderful composition by Roger Jannotta. It was written and performed as theatre music for the Faust cycle of the Münchener Kammerspiele and Roger and I have already recorded it in a trio with the vibraphone player David Friedman on the CD “LATE” (Konnex 5096).
